Contrary to the reports of one local news program, the final demolition of the spire of St. Augustine did not occur last week. I went by on Saturday, and as I had learned from a source already, it was still standing. A Caterpillar was screwing around with a pile of bricks.

It reminds me of the ruins of the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche in Berlin, though our spire here in St. Louis is not long for this world, as it will be demolished in the next couple of weeks.

I hope they are able to save the bells, which are still in the belfry.

The rectory is still standing, which will no doubt be torn down sometime in the future as no one will buy it and renovate it.

One thing’s for sure; this sign on the south side of Hebert Street is no longer relevant.
