St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Independence, Iowa

I visited St. John the Evangelist of Independence, Iowa way back in 2011, and then didn’t even get around to posting the photographs until 2018 (third and fourth pictures down). Interestingly, the transepts have double lancet windows, as opposed to a rose window.

The front façade is even more impressive when it’s not cloudy, like the last time I came through in the winter.

As mentioned back in 2018, the two towers are asymmetrical, recalling the influence of such famous cathedrals as Chartres.

The tripartite front portal also reminds me of the transept entrances at Chartres, though there is a German flavor to the church overall.

Looking at the parish’s website, it seems like it has been combined with another church in Winthrop to form a “cluster,” much as is proposed here in St. Louis.
