The west side of Twelfth Street north of Victor to Barton Street is an interesting mix of Second Empire storefronts and apartment buildings, with one later house thrown in.

The corner storefront builder ingeniously incorporated a house or small apartment building contiguous to the north, and then there is another Second Empire four-family just across a gangway.

Then there is the “odd man out,” which is clearly a house built later after another house or four-family was torn down. There were also far more house fires back in the day, as well.

This house is one I would expect to see around Tower Grove, not in Soulard.

Then there’s another imaginatively tiled Mansard Roof on this building; I do not know when they were painted, but it looks good.

The east side of the street has this nice Gothic Revival church, but the rest of the block has later buildings that are not architecturally interesting. One store in a cool old building, which I didn’t get a chance to photograph, is Vincent’s Market, which has been a neighborhood mainstay for decades, and a rare survivor in a community dominated by Soulard Market.
